Benchmark indices in India extended losses during midday trading as the 50% US tariff on Indian goods took effect, weighing heavily on export-oriented sectors. The Sensex dropped 0.55% to 80,340.53, while the Nifty 50 fell 0.49% to 24,591.15. Market breadth remained negative, with declining stocks outnumbering advancers on the BSE.

Sectoral indices mirrored the downturn, with Nifty Next 50, Financial Services, Bank, and Midcap 100 all slipping between 0.56% and 0.64%. Hero MotoCorp emerged as a rare bright spot, gaining 1.61%, while Asian Paints and Titan also posted modest gains.

The tariff-induced selloff reflects growing global trade tensions, though domestic-focused stocks showed relative resilience. Market participants await further clarity on the tariff's sectoral impact and potential policy responses from New Delhi.
